New fish inspection marks

Several inspection marks for fish package labeling were recently modified by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), part of the U.S. Department of Commerce.

A Lot Inspected mark (shown)-already used informally by many packagers-was officially created to replace the existing "officially sampled" and "accepted per specifications" marks currently used on retail labels. Another mark, the Packed Under Federal Inspection (PUFI) mark replaces the word "packed" with "processed" to more accurately reflect current regulatory requirements. A HACCP mark or "banner" also may be attached to existing inspection and grade marks to indicate that the product was produced under the HACCP-based program. HACCP stands for Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points, a risk-based inspection process that is being widely adopted throughout the food industry.
