FSIS says no to AMI

The U.S. Dept. of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) denied a request by the American Meat Institute (AMI) for a blanket 6-month extension of the August 8, 1995, deadline for revising ingredient labeling standards.

Instead, FSIS will consider temporary approval requests on a case-by-case basis. AMI asked for the extension because companies were finding it difficult to obtain printed film and bags to comply with the labeling changes. As well, it would have forced large inventories of packaging to be discarded.
