SERCOS N.A.: Next-generation SERCOS

Improving ease of integration by supporting higher protocols such as Ethernet, TCP/IP, and Profibus from office and fieldbus communication is one of the cornerstones of the newly announced Next-Generation SERCOS initiative.

Other intended improvements will include higher transmission speeds; improved interoperability of control and drive components by defining motion control profiles, such as the one being developed for packaging machinery; and the associated tests to ensure conformance. This would be the third-generation SERCOS interface, the only international standard for motion control—IEC 61491, according to SERCOS N.A, the trade group that promulgates the SERCOS standard. More than 75 companies market products that support SERCOS.
