EU and GE crops

In response to a complaint filed by the United States with the World Trade Organization over the European Union’s ban on new genetically engineered foods, reports indicate that the EU will lift the ban but require stricter labeling requirements.

The EU is said to be trying to impose lower tolerances for what foods must be labeled as genetically engineered and to require labels on more types of food products. According to a report in the Sacramento Bee, the American Farm Bureau is worried that because bulk commodities can be easily commingled with tiny quantities of biotech crops in distribution, huge volumes of mostly conventional crops would wind up being labeled as genetically modified.
