The proposed warning message would read as follows: "GOVERNMENT WARNING: (1) According to the Surgeon General, women should not drink alcoholic beverages during pregnancy because of the risk of birth defects. (2) Consumption of alcoholic beverages impairs your ability to drive a car or operate machinery, and may lead to alcoholism. (3) Moderate consumption of alcoholic beverages may cause health problems such as hypertension and breast cancer." Responding to the bill, the National Beer Wholesalers Assn. said, "the Neo-Prohibitionists are grasping at straws. The research to back up their outrageous claims just isn't there."
Stronger alcohol labeling?
Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-SC) introduced legislation to amend the Alcoholic Beverage Labeling Act to include more information in the message warning of negative health effects associated with drinking alcohol.
