New Freedonia study predicts high demand for protective packaging

Economic recovery, increase in manufacturing and growing internet sales fuel turnaround.

According to the latest study just released by Freedonia, US demand for protective packaging will reach $5.2 billion by 2014.

Foamed plastic is lightweight, offers great cushioning capabilities, and can conform to any shape. It will experience above-average growth, according to the study.

Other packing types to see growing demand are air pillows, molded pulp, bubble packaging, protective mailers and insulated shipping containers.

Molded pulp will satisfy demand for environmentally-friendly packaging, and insulated containers answer the need for temperature-sensitive pharmaceuticals and increased online sales of perishable foods.

The growth in biologics, particularly, calls for temperature control throughout the supply chain, “which is critical for the efficacy of such drugs,” says Freedonia.

More moderate growth is expected for paperboard protectors, paper fill, dunnage bags and loose-fill.
