Shrink-sleeve labels for Sunsilk Naturals shampoos and for Clinic All Clear, two products from Hindustan Lever Ltd., New Delhi, were part of relaunches of those products last year.
Both labels are sleeves of 1.5-mil shrink-grade polyvinyl chloride. For Clinic All Clear, the new label replaces a pressure-sensitive label that had been used in the past. Lever had wanted to eliminate p-s labels, but it wanted to retain the hot-foil-stamping that had been used on the previous p-s label.
To achieve the customer goals, The Paper Products, Ltd. converts the label with complex eight-color reverse gravure printing plus the hot-foil stamping. The ability to hot-stamp a heat-sensitive material like shrink-grade PVC without distortion was a technical achievement for the converter.
Hindustan Lever had a similar sales goal with Sunsilk, although the relaunch included a new container and new graphics. In this case, the converter prints by gravure the PVC both reverse and on the surface, completely in register with special inks and lacquers to achieve a special frosty, matte finish to certain areas of the sleeve. —AO
