Wraparound origins

When it came time for Tayland Cellars to bottle new L'Ecosse wine, original was the operative word. Since the wine is made from grapes that originated in the French region where Joan of Arc was born, the label depicts a nouveau-like illustration of the heroine.

The Napa, CA-based company used a stock green bottle from CGC Encore (Richmond, CA) that replicates the type of bottle used in the area where the grapes originated. Furthermore, in lieu of standard foil capsules, the company opted for a wax capsule, one of the original methods for sealing wine bottles. This twentieth-century version, however, includes a polymer additive to guard against chipping and cracking during shipping. "The benefit is that wax is the best enclosure you can possibly use," says owner Bruce Scotland. "The drawback is that it's time consuming-painfully slow." One by one, each of the 3ꯠ bottles were hand-dipped into the polymerized wax. Also original is the 23" wraparound label, designed by Michael Osborne Design (San Francisco, CA). The embossed label is die-cut in a pennant shape. Adhesive was manually applied to the ends of each label, then the label was wrapped around each of the bottles. Ben Franklin Press (Napa, CA) process-printed the label in six colors, with metallic ink around the trim. Sold mainly in California, as well as some outlets in New York City and Chicago, the wine was said to have sold out in three days. It retailed at $22.50. There are plans to use similar packaging for next season's vintage.
