'Empty' box design delivers brand message

A seemingly empty box for 3M’s Scotch Magic Tape holds five rolls of replacement tape, emphasizing the ‘invisible’ nature of the adhesive product through packaging.

A clever illusion for 3M’s Scotch Magic Tape packaging in Germany drove home the “invisible” nature of the product by presenting consumers with a seemingly empty box holding five rolls of replacement tape. The limited-edition promotional package, launched in summer 2014, was the invention of Hamburg-based creative agency Kolle Rebbe.

“The idea originated here, where we are constantly coming up with product and packaging ideas for our clients,” says Sascha Hanke, Executive Creative Director of Kolle-Rebbe. “3M is a very innovative company with very innovative products, so naturally we asked ourselves, ‘Why not have innovative packaging?’
