Extinguisher package sparks interest

Fire extinguishers designed for in-home use have become common enough in the past few years, and typically they're displayed in paperboard cartons.

But Figgie Fire Protection Systems wanted to be different with the smallest extinguisher in its line of Full Security fire extinguishers, so the Charlottesville, VA-based firm put its 3/4-lb model in a clear clamshell package. "The clamshell gives consumers an opportunity to see the product," says marketing services manager Tod Cohen. Both single and twin-packed versions are available. The new package, thermoformed of 22-mil polyvinyl chloride by Techform (Mt. Airy, NC), is designed with merchandising flexibility in mind. Its flat bottom makes it suitable for standup display while a hole die cut through the header allows for pegboard arrangement. A 14-pt SBS insert, printed offset in four colors by Progress Printing (Lynchburg, VA), displays the Full Security logo and product information. Introduced at the National Hardware Show last August, the Full Security line is yet to be mass-marketed but can be found in smaller hardware stores. A national campaign with in-store displays is being considered. Suggested retail price on the 3/4-lb extinguisher is $12.95.
