Tracking innovative product/package development

Debuted to the general public on the television show “Shark Tank,” Hoppy Paws, Newport Beach, CA, has created a product to add fun and imagination to the holidays.

Very simply, the stamper kit allows the laying down of water-washable paw prints—for example, reindeers at Christmas or bunny rabbits at Easter—around the floors and other surfaces of the home.

The product and packaging consist of four major components—the outer paperboard carton, powdered paint in a clear film pouch, the stamper (made from die-cut foam adhesively adhered to a chipboard card) and a rigid plastic tray for mixing the paint powder in water and then dipping the stamp to create the paw prints. The paw prints can be applied on floors, walls, tables, and other flat surfaces, and the water-soluble, non-toxic paint can be easily wiped away with a damp cloth.

To accomplish the packaging, Hoppy Paws enlisted the services of Assemblies Unlimited, Inc., a full turnkey contract packager capable of providing hand-assembly, materials and systems fulfillment, and custom packaging management.

The 4” x 6” pouches for the powdered paint are formed, filled, and sealed at speeds of 30 to 40 per minute. These pouches are made from moisture vapor- and oxygen-barrier 3-mil PET roll stock film supplied by a China-based manufacturer. The pouches are sealed on three sides, and they feature a perforated tear-notch, easy-open top. The rigid plastic paint-mixing trays are made of polypropylene and supplied by Intertrade Industries.

Designed for pegboard display, the 4-color-printed paperboard over cartons are die-cut, folded, and strip-glued. These cartons are supplied and printed by Primary Color. They are erected and loaded manually.

Hoppy Paws founder and CEO Trina Barkouras says, “The packaging is executed perfectly by Assemblies Unlimited. Previously, we would load the paint powder into the bags by hand. So having it automated saves us a ton of time.“

Beyond reindeer tracks at Christmas and bunny tracks at Easter, Hoppy Paws also has been developing other holiday ideas—for example, “glow-in-the dark” cat paw prints for Halloween.
