Packaging woes prompt meat processors to seek relief

The American Meat Institute (AMI) has asked for a six-month extension of the August 8 implementation date for new ingredient labeling requirements by USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service.

As sometimes happens with required labeling changes, a shortage of packaging is making it difficult for meat processors to meet the deadline, AMI told the agency. Processors have had trouble obtaining the printed film and bags they need. In addition, many plants have large inventories of printed packaging materials which they would like to use up.
