Country-of-origin labeling bills anew

Several new bills have been introduced in Congress to require country-of-origin labeling on products containing imported meat and meat products. The bills would amend the Federal Meat Inspection Act so that packaging not containing a label identifying the country of origin of imported meat and meat products would be considered misbranded.

NFPA is calling on its members to contact their representatives in Congress to oppose the measures. Meanwhile, two top lawmakers, Sen. William Roth (R-DE), chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, and Rep. Bill Archer (R-TX), chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, sent a letter to Treasury Secretary Robert E. Rubin expressing their opposition to the continuing attempt by the U.S. Customs Service to require front-panel country-of-origin labeling of packages of frozen fruit and vegetable products with imported content. The two committees have oversight jurisdiction over Customs.
