Restrictions on chlorine use worry plastics makers

Proposals that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) restrict the use of chlorine and chlorinated compounds are worrying plastics manufacturers. Some studies have indicated that chlorine is harmful to both human health and the environment.

The Society of Plastics Engineers (SPE) says speculation or false assumptions are fueling the calls for restrictions on chlorine use. It called for policy making to be based on sound science and include a risk assessment and a cost-benefit analysis. Chlorine is a vital element in the manufacture of many plastic raw materials, as well as numerous additives that are widely used in the plastics industry.
