Trade show aisles and brokers' contact lists are no longer the only places brands, contract packagers, and retailers are finding each other. New online sourcing platforms promise to make those matches faster, and to keep track of specs and compliance once a partnership is in place.
A case in point is Greene Concepts, the Marion, N.C., bottler of Be Water artesian spring water, which has been building its presence on Keychain, one of the more visible sourcing platforms in this space where brands look for beverage production partners.
Alongside its own brand, Greene Concepts produces private-label, white-label, and co-packed beverages at its 60,000-sq-ft plant, which draws on spring and artesian wells fed by an aquifer beneath the Blue Ridge Mountains. To raise plant utilization and grow its production relationships, the company is courting emerging and established brands as well as other contract manufacturers and packagers via Keychain.
The company's pitch to brand partners rests on coordinating six stages: concept and formulation, planning and sourcing, production and filling, quality assurance, packaging and preparation, and distribution. Keeping those stages in sync, it says, protects quality and consistency and heads off delays as a customer's volumes grow.
"We want to be a manufacturing partner that understands the entire journey—from planning and preparation through production, quality, packaging and delivery to the marketplace," said CEO Lenny Greene. "That comprehensive approach allows us to help customers navigate the manufacturing process while preparing for future growth."
From matchmaking to management
Keychain began as a search tool for figuring out who can make what. Its newer Keychain360 software goes further, giving brands and retailers one place to manage packaging specs, vendors, and compliance across outsourced supply chains.
In Packaging World's coverage of the platform’s work with retailers like CVS, Keychain CEO Oisin Hanrahan says the platform can cut manufacturer discovery from 8 to 12 weeks down to about a week.
Keychain isn't the only such platform. CoPackConnect, launched by the Contract Packaging Association and The Melville Group, uses AI-driven RFQs to match brands with contract manufacturers and packagers.
Beyond the first run
For anyone on such platforms, getting found is only the start. Greene Concepts approaches what happens next in a disciplined way: forecasts, order timing, inventory, and distribution should be worked out before demand jumps.
"Growth is a great opportunity, but it needs to be planned for," Greene said. "When a retailer expands a product into additional locations, a distributor opens a new territory or consumer demand increases, the manufacturing side of the business needs to be ready to respond."
Keychain aside, Greene Concepts' gallon filling line shows how that approach plays out with a private-label customer. In April, pet hydration company EPETWATER placed an initial multi-truckload private-label order for gallon-size water marketed under the Sport Dog label. By June, Greene Concepts had begun producing Sport Dog Top Cat, a gallon artesian spring water aimed at the pet market and also labeled as safe for people. The bottler added a category using capacity it already had, and the brand got to retail without building a plant.
It's still an open question whether sourcing platforms such as Keychain and CoPackConnect become a default channel or stay one option among many. For now, they give smaller co-packers a way to reach buyers they might never meet on a show floor, and brands new opportunities for expansion.
