Sara Lee’s Sacramento, CA, bakery reached out to the Smurfit-Stone (www.smurfit.com) company and developed a recycling program that has greatly reduced the amount of waste the plant sends to the landfill for disposal. Now, Smurfit-Stone not only picks up the corrugated they once delivered to the recycler, but also handles plastic, including obsolete packaging, used ingredient bags, and paper that once went into the trash compactor. The first pick-up by Smurfit-Stone occurred on Oct. 30, 2007. A few months into the program, they were able to evaluate and establish a landfill baseline. The result: a 24% reduction in their landfill volume. Year to date, the partnership with Smurfit-Stone has generated 70 tons of recycled products that would have previously gone to the landfill.
