The new light beer begins testing this month in three U.S. cities and the state of Rhode Island.

In the past, most imported beers were filled into amber or green glass bottles to protect the flavor from degradation caused by light, particularly UV rays from the sun or indoor lighting. Nienburger, a wholly owned subsidiary of Brauerei Beck & Co., Bremen, Germany, developed and patented a modified glass composition that produces a bottle with higher resistance to flavor-damaging light rays. Extensive testing by the brewery proved the clear bottles protect the freshness of Beck's Light as well as a standard tinted bottle.

The 12-oz bottle is sold for on-premise consumption, as well as in six- and 12-packs for retail sale.
