FDA and FSIS discuss jurisdiction

FDA and the Food Safety and Inspection Service held a public meeting in Rosemont, IL, on December 15, 2005, to discuss ways to decide which agency regulates which food products when it comes to foods that contain meat and poultry ingredients.

In an effort to bring more consistency and predictability to the system, the agencies are considering using the contribution of the meat or poultry ingredients to the identity of the food as the determinant of jurisdiction.

Among the products likely to be affected are bagel dogs; natural casings; closed-face sandwiches made with meat or poultry; cheese or cheese products (including dips) made with less than 50% meat or poultry; bread, rolls, and buns made with less than 50% meat or poultry; dried poultry soup mixes; flavor bases/flavors; pizza with meat or poultry; and salad dressings made with less than 50% meat or poultry.
