Over the course of almost 20 years in wine packaging, I have experienced many eureka moments. The most recent was the repackaging of one of our brands, Tin Roof. The redesign including changing from a 30 x 60-mm screw cap to a traditional capsule finish using a polylaminate material.
I have a lot of experience with this material, and it’s very common to experience horizontal circles on the spun capsule, which is caused by the spinner rollers. Certain metallic colors show this very noticeably.
Due to the rather tight timeline of the package change, we conducted some confirmation testing that the new capsule would spin smoothly and thus did not test live printed capsules.
We were quite surprised on the first day of full production that the horizontal lines were extremely noticeable on the metallic silver material (shown close-up in inset), more so than any capsule I’ve ever experienced. I immediately brought this to the attention of our marketing group. Instead of being upset, they were actually very happy with the look as it replicated the corrugated tin roof foil stamped on the house printed on our label.
The lesson learned: Sometimes you just get lucky.
