Jazzed-up presentation fetches $249 for CD box set

Here’s another commemorative package that increases the “ring” at retail. In this case, it’s $249 for a commemorative box set of jazz music. Planet Propaganda (www.planetpropaganda.com),  a design agency, designed the packaging and 80-page booklet for “Talking Jazz,” Ben Sidran’s CD box set; only 1,000 sets are being released.

Pw 8397 Talking Jazz Box Set

The 24-disc collection features rare conversations from 60 legendary jazz musicians, including Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie.

The packaging sells the romance of the jazz industry. “More than a year ago, Ben came to us with the desire to release interviews from his NPR radio program. ‘On the Record with Ben Sidran,’” says Greg Wold, Plant Propaganda brand manager.

The Talking Jazz set’s functional display case is worthy of passionate jazz collectors who will appreciate its exclusivity. The contents are presented so that listeners can easily identify artists and their instruments.

The entire package is unified by typography, texture, and images from photographer Lee Tanner. The carton and lid are heavy chipboard wrapped in white, coated paper. The paper is offset-printed in two colors.

The carton slides into a white slipcase of white, coated paper offset-printed in three colors. Both the carton and slipcover have a matte laminate covered by a UV spot gloss to enhance texture and appearance.

Sleeves containing the CDs use a cover-weight stock and a matte laminate while the book’s sheets are matte-coated.
