Her essay, "Message on the bottle," is one of three to appear in Graphis Bottle Design: Beer, Wine, Spirits, the newest publication ($39.95) from Graphis Inc. (New York, NY), edited by B. Martin Pederson. "The bottle/label designer needs a highly tuned aesthetic," she continues, "which transcends function and form into pure image." Likewise, Graphis Bottle Design transcends reference book, becoming more of a collector's scrapbook of both bottles currently available in the marketplace and self-promotional pieces used by designers. Although well organized into beer, wine and spirits categories, it's the dramatic photographs of the bottles that take precedence. The 260-page, soft cover book showcases more than 250 designs. The oblong shape of the book, measuring roughly 7" x 111/2", lends itself to the generally long and narrow bottle shapes. Bottle designs were submitted by designers, breweries, microbreweries and wineries in response to an international call for entries.
'Message on the bottle'
"The perfume bottles which grace a dressing table and the beverage bottles which languish in the cupboard speak volumes about their owners," writes Mary Lewis of London-based design consultancy Lewis Moberly.
