Are Prefilled Syringes The Most-preferred Method for Injectable Meds?

Prefilled syringes are not only convenient for at-home use, they also offer safety and convenience features for hospital staff.

Liz Cuneo, Editor-in-Chief of Healthcare Packaging asks Justin Schroeder, Global Vice President, Technical Sales for PCI about the rise in prefilled syringe popularity.

HCP: So would you say that prefilled syringes are becoming the most preferred method for injectable medications? I'm hearing more and more about at home use, versus going in and having a doctor administer medicine.

Schroeder: Yeah, I think there's a significant opportunity in the market for self-administration, which, you know, GPL1s is a great example of that, but not limited to that category. We see it for all types of drug delivery forms, and of course, the precursor to that was the diabetes market, right? That's an area that's long established for self-administration, and so that kind of set the pathway for these other drugs.

But all these new platform devices that we're seeing for auto injectors, for needle safety devices, etc. make it a lot easier for even rare diseases to be able to come to market in a device and potentially be self-administered. Also, in the context of prefilled syringes, it may or may not be for self-administration, but it sure gives the healthcare practitioner a lot of advantages versus the traditional method of trying to draw a syringe from a vial as an example. So having it pre-measured, having it pre-sterilized is very convenient; there's a huge benefit to the overall healthcare system, whether or not it's self-administered or professionally administered.
