Map My Mole has created an Image Capture Kit for users to take medical quality images of their moles at home. The kit includes a clinical dermoscope, which is a magnifying lens attachment for smartphones. The lens allows users to capture medical quality images of their moles at home, which are then assessed by a consultant dermatologist.
“The new Home Kit packaging was developed to make the user experience as simple, intuitive, and reassuring as possible,” says Chris Owen-Smith, Co-Founder, Map My Mole. “We recognize that many people using the kit have never taken clinical images of a skin lesion before, so it was important that the packaging itself helped guide users through the process.”
To do this, the company turned to Burgopak to create the intuitive at-home kit. According to Map My Mole, the brief was to design a pack that provides coherence to the content with a clear arrangement of the lens, sachets, and instructions. Ease of use and accessibility were key considerations throughout the design process.
“As a physical touch point in a largely digital sample collection, the packaging is playing an important role in signaling trust, efficacy, and reassurance,” says Alexander Parker, Head of Wellness at Burgopak. “There is no healthcare professional in the room with you. You can imagine that given the nature of the product there could a spectrum of emotions wrapped up in its use. In this case the packaging clearly, sequentially, intuitively, and calmly lays out the components - presenting the IFU and the supporting components ready for use.”

“Patients consistently tell us that clear instructions and a straightforward process are essential, particularly when they are concerned about a skin lesion and may be feeling anxious,” says Owen-Smith. “The new packaging was designed with this feedback in mind, helping to create a more intuitive experience from the moment the kit is opened. Early responses have been positive, with users appreciating the organized layout and clear presentation of the kit contents.”
The kit is sold in pharmacies and clinics as well as mailed to users at their home, so the design needed to work for all scenarios. With the shipping option, the lens also needed to be secured and protected during transit.
"When someone receives a home testing kit, they should immediately understand what to do next. The new Burgopak design helps remove uncertainty and guides users through the process in a clear and reassuring way, which is particularly important when they're seeking answers about a potential skin concern,” says Owen-Smith.
The Map My Mole Image Capture Kit is housed in one of Burgopak’s signature sliding packaging designs and is made of 265gsm METSÄBOARD Pro FBB Bright. It is available to purchase at www.mapmymole.com/home-mole-checks.
