New shrink wrapper integrates PackML

Extreme Package Machinery will showcase an SAL-Series shrink wrap system with B&R Industrial Automation controls and PackML-compliant programming at PACK EXPO 2013. A single controller, a PP500 from B&R, manages motion and machine control. The PP500 connects to the servos, AC drives and I/O through the POWERLINK Ethernet network for high-speed control of all machine functions. A separate Safety PLC allows for advanced safety circuit design and is dedicated to performing safety functions rated to CAT3/SIL2.

Extreme Packaging Machinery, Rancho Santa Margarita, California, manufactures high-performance automatic shrink wrappers/ baggers, shrink tunnels and infeed systems for a wide range of industries, including food, pharmaceutical, consumer goods and building supply. Extreme designs its shrink wrap systems for ease of use, versatility, high speed, and low film consumption.

Extreme machines are constructed with efficiency and sustainability in mind, adapting the latest control, drive and sensor technology to meet the specific packaging needs of customers. All wrappers are designed for continuous motion, where sealing mechanism moves with the product, resulting in higher output speeds with fewer rejects and much lower film consumption.

Extreme builds shrink wrap systems for leading consumer products goods manufacturers, and many small to mid-size manufacturing companies and contract packagers in a broad spectrum of industries. For PACK EXPO 2013 Extreme is showcasing a SAL-Series shrink wrap system with B&R Industrial Automation controls.

Managing the wrapper system’s control and motion execution is B&R Industrial Automation’s Power Panel 500. The Power Panel 500 integrates the HMI and controller into one unit. The PP500 is connected to the servos, ac drives, and I/O through the POWERLINK Ethernet network for high-speed control of all machine functions. With one controller managing motion and machine control, Extreme Packaging’s customers benefit from having fewer components and spare parts – and easier integration with other production systems. The safety system of the machine is managed by the separate B&R Safety PLC allowing for advanced safety circuit design and dedicated to performing safety functions rated to CAT3/SIL2.

Programming is PackML-compliant allowing end-users to easily integrate the machine into any PackML compliant production line as well as being able to gather pertinent data via OPC for calculating machine productivity and efficiency. OPC servers provide a method for many different software packages (so long as it is an OPC Client) to access data from a process control device, such as a PLC or DCS.

The wrapper’s motion control, safety functions, operator interface and control software enable each part of the system – infeed, wrapper, seal head and shrink tunnel – to work together seamlessly.
