Multi-layer unit-dose packaging

Innovative technology enables the use of different plastics within a unit-dose pack—for when one layer is not enough.

LF of America Corp., a member of The Lameplast Group, Italy launced its newest innovation in unit-dose packaging--quite possibly the final frontier of unit-dose luxury packaging. Options for environmentally friendly packaging are featured.

Glass, Glam, Soft touch, Steam-proof, Total block, Eco: These are the new characteristics of the multi-layer unit-dose ampoules in strips of five developed by The Lameplast Group, the world leader in unit-dose technologies. After several years of research, the R&D labs of The Lameplast Group have developed the use of various plastics (including PE and PP polymers) and the combination of polymers in various layers including layers of recycled plastic materials.

This multi-layer unit-dose opens interesting new opportunities for displaying and protecting cosmetics and pharmaceutical products. Unlike conventional single-layer plastic containers, these new multi-layer packs have an outer layer, and middle EVOH layer (if desired), and an inner layer that is in contact with the cosmetic or pharmaceutical product. Each layer may be chosen based on specific marketing requirements including the increase of barrier properties, to improve unit-dose compressibility, or simply to play with colors without interfering with the contents.

Currently available in 1 mL or 3 mL ampoules in strips of five, the new LF of America Corp. containers are suitable for containing any type of liquid, cream, or gel product. The shape of the ampoule and the thickness of the layers may be further customized. Production of these new multi-layer containers is carried out in an ISO 8 clean room in accordance with UNI-EN-ISO 14644-1. Rigorous checks are conducted throughout the manufacturing process to ensure the customary level of quality multiplied over three layers.

Six different possibilities for packaging cosmetics products with the new multi-layer:

Glass: Highly transparent to enhance the contents.

Glam: Customizable with standard or high-fashion colors. The color is applied to the outer layer only in order to prevent contact with the contents.

Soft touch: Ultra-soft and pleasing to the touch, the soft touch version is easily compressed to totally empty the contents.
Steam-proof: Made from materials resistant to autoclave sterilization (121 degrees C for 20 minutes), without compromising the compressibility of the unit-dose.

Total-block: Designed for products requiring a high level of protection providing an excellent barrier against water vapor, oxygen, CO2, and light—a valid alternative to aluminum pouches and amber glass.

Eco: Designed for reduced environmental impact and an excellent choice for natural or organic products. These Eco unit-doses are made with an outer layer of recycled plastic and an inner layer of top quality virgin PE or PP.
