The problem, in CSPI’s view, is the voluntary system under which biotech companies are encouraged but not required to submit safety-testing data for FDA review. In reviewing 14 submissions, CSPI found instances where companies refused to provide additional information requested by FDA, technical shortcomings in the safety data, and some obvious errors.
CSPI recommended that the voluntary notification system be replaced with a mandatory premarket approval system. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) is expected to reintroduce legislation supporting a mandatory system again this year. Barring legislation, the consumer advocacy group urged FDA to develop detailed safety-testing guidelines.
CSPI has taken a generally open-minded approach toward GM foods, noting they have the potential to provide great benefit to consumers and the environment. But the technology’s future will be cut short if dangerous biotech products show up on supermarket shelves. Formal government approval based on a thorough and transparent review is the only way to ensure consumer confidence in GE foods, CSPI warned.
