Senate nixes OSHA's ergonomic efforts

The Senate followed the House’s lead in using its appropriations bill for the Departments of Labor and Health and Human Services to ban the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) from using any of its funding for its proposed ergonomic standard.

The two appropriations bills now move to a conference committee to iron out their differences. The fate of the ergonomics standard, a high priority for organized labor, may rest with a presidential veto of the budget. Meanwhile, Food Distributors Intl., a leading opponent of the ergonomic standard, has called for the agency to rescind its proposed rule.
