Coating line boosts Van Leer's capacity

By September, Van Leer Metallized Products, Franklin, MA, expects to have a new coating line running that will virtually double its metallized paper shipment capacity to 20ꯠ tons/yr.

The new single-station line coats webs up to 92" wide at 2ꯠ-fpm speeds. It has dual moisture add-back stations that allow Van Leer to maintain layflat/flat paper qualities during production. Made by Black Clawson (Fulton, NY), the new line will minimize changeover, says the converter's general manager Frank Sereno. "Currently, the paper passes through a Black Clawson line twice, first for premetallization coating, then for a prime coating. The new line will eliminate the need for two passes on the same machine." And, he adds, "The line will be dedicated to the primer coating process while the existing line will be lacquer coating only. This will help us reach critical mass at our plant in that we'll be fully using our assets."
