Topshop among brands bringing quirky design to cosmetics, fragrances

Roughly drawn illustrations and smudges are among the line’s visual elements. There’s also a trend toward looking to other categories for design inspiration.

Cosmetics and fragrances that feature quirky designs or borrow visual inspiration from other categories around the store are beginning to populate store shelves.

Joining the movement is Topshop, a retailer that is part of the Arcadia Group. Topshop is introducing a family of make-up products in package designs that are unusual in cosmetics and fragrance packaging. The packaging features spots, stripes, and smudges that are hand-drawn using kohl eyeliner.

Black cartons display roughly drawn illustrations of the products inside the containers.

For another take on this trend, look at packaging for La Senza’s fragrance line. The company, a popular lingerie retailer in Canada and 30 other countries, is extending the equities of its lingerie into its La Seduction fragrance line using tactics such as a hand-drawn black-lace pattern on the carton, along with embossing and a varnished finish.
