British grocer offers packaging "take-back". . .

For six weeks starting today, UK supermarket giant Tesco will let customers leave any packaging they deem unnecessary at the door as they leave with their purchases.

The trial will measure consumer's packaging preferences, and will be used to help Tesco make product and packaging decisions in the future. A similar packaging take-back trial in Germany found that consumers did not want the cartons for tubes of toothpaste. Now, toothpaste on German shelves just stands on its cap. Interestingly, while some consumers in the UK are very anti-packaging, others think packaging is essential. Case in point: the mother whose nut-allergic child sees packaging as a critical way to find out about nut content in products.
