NC law mandates bar/restaurant container recycling

A North Carolina state law (HB 237) went into effect Jan. 1 requiring all Alcoholic Beverage Control permit holders to recycle beverage containers sold at retail for on-premise consumption.

This includes glass bottles, aluminum cans, and plastic bottles, although 100% recyclable glass beer, wine, and liquor containers are expected to be most of what is generated for recycling.
This legislation is likely to boost glass recycling in a state where there is strong demand. Three glass manufacturing plants and two glass processing facilities are located in North Carolina.
Glass container recycling at bars and restaurants is also growing in other key states, including Colorado and California. For more information, go to www.gpimail.org/news/2007/oct/mail.htm#7.
