The Indian packaging market: Why India? Why now...

The director of the Indian Institute of Packaging says a confluence of factors is combing to create a perfect opportunity for the packaging industry in the country.

India's large middle class —equal in size to the entire United States —is accumulating wealth and disposable income. They are demanding more consumer products than are available. Additionally, larger retailers are beginning to replace traditional road-side stalls, requiring "self-serve" packaging. The Indian government supports the development of the packaging industry, but international packagers are needed to fill the gap between India's needs and its ability to fill those needs. Packaging designers, as well as packaging machine and material manufacturers, should be poised to take advantage of the new market where Indian manufacturers need guidance in packaging technology and innovation. Perhaps most attractive to foreign packaging manufacturers is the recent reduction of import duty rates on packaging machines to a low 5 percent. To help U.S. suppliers of packaging machinery reach Indian customers, a Web site, www.SellPackagingToIndia.com, has been set up.
