Private label in Europe is sweet on candy. . .

A recent Neilsen study indicates that the retailer brand confectionery market has grown significantly in Western, Central and Eastern Europe.

In the United Kingdom, nearly a quarter of confectionery products sold were retailer brands in 2006. In France, the retailer brands of confectionery held 19.1 percent of the confectionery market, and in Germany, 35. 8 percent of the market was held by retailer brand confectionery. The biggest market share gains were in Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia, according to the study. Many confectionery companies, including Cadbury, Cemoi, and Leaf International are working on strategies to break into the eastern European markets.
