Groups want government action on "alcopops"

CSPI and a number of other groups are calling for a federal crackdown on what they call unfair and misleading marketing of “alcopop” beverages (sweet, fruit-flavored, malt-based drinks), which teens are more likely to consume than adults.

The groups note that these drinks come in “hip, bright, and colorful youth-oriented packaging” and that the labels resemble those of their nonalcoholic counterparts, though they do list alcohol content. The government has been criticized for not halting the marketing of these products by approving their labels. Alcopops are described as gateway drugs that ease young people into drinking. A poll showed that teens were more familiar with alcopops than adults by a three to one margin, and they were more than twice as likely to have tried them.
