Kentucky bottle bill

Legislation to establish a beverage container deposit law is expected to be introduced in the Kentucky Legislature in 2000, but a study by the University of Kentucky funded by Kentucky Grocers Assn.

indicates that a deposit law would have a significant negative impact on the state's economy. Grocers stand to lose $240 million in sales annually, with additional millions lost to the state in tax revenues. Hardest hit would be counties bordering states that do not have deposit laws because consumers would simply cross the border to shop. A Container Deposit Task Force, created by the legislature in 1998 after legislation to establish a deposit law was introduced, will make its recommendation in the fall of 1999.
