Waxed box marking

To make it easier for grocery store workers to properly separate recyclable non-waxed corrugated cases from waxed cases, some corrugated case manufacturers will begin marking waxed cases with the word "wax" in English, French and Spanish.

Member companies of American and Canadian paper and box associations are expected to take part in the voluntary program. It's designed to reduce the number of recyclable non-waxed boxes that currently end up in landfills. The Fibre Box Assn. hopes the clearer identification will help divert an estimated 10% to 15% of non-waxed cartons from landfills back to the corrugated recycling stream. Identification of waxed boxes was requested by the grocery industry, which is the source of one-third of all recovered boxes.
