Dairy health claims

IDFA has asked FDA to reconsider the industry's petition to allow dairy-related health claims on food packaging. Specifically, it wants permission for claims associating adequate calcium intake with reduced hypertension risk.

IDFA also asked FDA to consider claims linking low-fat dairy product consumption to reduced hypertension risk. FDA denied IDFA's original petition on the grounds that it could not consider the supporting evidence for the link between dairy product consumption and lower hypertension risk because of time restrictions in the review process. In what IDFA took as a positive signal, the agency said IDFA could submit a petition on lower fat dairy products without having to resubmit the evidence in the original petition. IDFA's petition called for FDA to conduct an open public meeting during which researchers with appropriate expertise could consider IDFA's scientific evidence. The meeting would be the first step toward amending current law to allow the label claim.
