CR packaging matters

Child-resistant drug packaging saved the lives of an estimated 460 children ages 4 and under between 1974, when such packaging was introduced, and 1992, according to a new report by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

That represents a reduction of 45% in projected child fatalities without child-resistant packaging requirements. CPSC based its report on cause-of-death statistics from the National Center for Health Statistics. Given the effectiveness of child-resistant packaging, CPSC senior economist Gregory Rodgers recommended its use whenever possible. Rodgers cautioned, however, that child-resistant packaging does not mean child-proof and that safe storage of medications is most important.
