Have you ever wondered why transition lenses exist for glasses, but not contact lenses? An April 19th CBS News article finally puts the issue to rest, noting that after ten years of development, the FDA has approved the first ever transition contact lenses. Johnson & Johnson created the darkening Acuvue Oasys lenses with the same technology used for transition eyeglasses.

The lenses do not provide UV protection, which puts wearers at risk of cataracts, macular degeneration, and growths on or near the eye due to excessive sun exposure. Thus, a spokesperson from the American Academy of Ophthalmology suggests avoiding looking directly into the sun, wearing a hat, and investing in proper sunglasses.
