SIG Combibloc has developed what it says is the world’s first aseptic carton pack made from 100 percent renewable, plant-based materials.

The SIGNATURE PACK replaces conventional plastics from fossils fuels with certified and sustainable plant-based polymer materials. The polymers used for laminating the paperboard and making the spout originate from renewable European wood sources. The polymers are certified according to the ISCC PLUS (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification) and the CMS 71 (TÜV SÜD certification standard) via a mass balance system. Mass balancing entails manufacturing the polymers with an equivalent amount of bio-based feedstock.

“Developing an aseptic carton pack fully linked to renewable plant materials is quite a challenge,” says Ace Fung, global product manager at SIG Combibloc. “Aseptic packages, where the product can be stored without refrigeration over a long period, have higher barrier requirements than chilled packages.”

SIG Combibloc developed the SIGNATURE PACK to meet the demands of the industry and consumers for environmentally friendly products and packaging that is sustainable. The new green packaging aligns with the company’s business strategy called Way Beyond Good, which seeks to create eco-friendly packaging that delivers food in a safe, sustainable and affordable way while reducing its carbon footprint.
