Blue Buffalo leads the U.S. in sales of dog and cat food

According to Euromonitor data, Mars occupies the number-two spot with its Pedigree brand, and Nestle claims third, fourth and fifth place with Fancy Feast, Friskies and Purina One.

It’s no secret Americans love their pets, and grocery stores shelves hold a dazzling array of brands and package types. Metal is the number-one choice for pet food manufacturers in the U.S. (see chart). Sixty-seven percent of dog and cat food packaged in the U.S. comes in cans, with 23% coming in flexible packaging. Paper-based packaging and rigid plastic make up the last ten percent.

In Canada, metal packaging captures 54% of the market, with flexible packaging claiming a much larger share than the U.S. with 44%.
