Update on ISA spec

An important specification based on ISA88 that has been gaining traction in the packaging arena is ISA-TR88.00.02, a product of OMAC’s Packaging Workgroup and ISA. The specification encourages modular and flexible packaging automation solutions that can share a common batch control interface with the upstream processing equipment. This approach drives a consistent look and feel for users, easier line integration and changeovers, and lower machine costs.

Randy Dwiggins, ISA-88 Chairman and also Principal Automation Engineer at NNE Pharmaplan, recently announced that the second edition of ISA-TR88.00.02-Ed.2-CDV2, Machine and Unit States, was approved by the ISA88 Committee and that final approval by the ISA Standards & Practices Board is expected in early summer of this year.

“Users were finding the first version too long and complicated, making it difficult to understand how it should be applied,” says Dwiggins. “So in this revised version it’s been simplified, and some of the optional information has been removed. OEE [Overall Equipment Effectiveness] strategies, for example are still under development, so some of that was removed. The idea was to make it easier for people to use and apply the spec.”

Dwiggins adds that the timing of this second edition coincides with more support from batch software vendors and more users asking OEMs to leverage the specification so their packaging controls will be more modular and more able to interface with recipes. It’s more flexible for both users and suppliers when it comes to integrating different systems and configurations together.

“The new and improved version of the TR should be available from ISA in a few months. Many thanks to everyone who reviewed the drafts and especially to OMAC for taking the lead and doing most of the work on this,” adds Dwiggins.
