Retailers: Paperboard can help evolve private label (sidebar)

Research identifies channel opportunities

After analyzing the rapid blurring and growth in retail channels, Packaging & Technology Integrated Solutions offered these packaging possibilities for private-label brands:

• One unmet challenge in convenience stores is packaging that makes products easy to find on cramped shelves.

• A rapidly growing network within the convenience-store segment is specialized convenience-store distributors, such as A.C. Hackney or Core-Mark. They order and rotate inventory and return unsold items. These distributors want to prevent shop-worn packaging while improving display capability, adding convenience, and reducing clutter.

• Dollar stores want durable packages that simplify stock rotation and sell the concepts of fun and impulse purchase.

• Mass merchandisers and traditional retailers also want stocking solutions. These include display cartons that show the product, easy-to-stock packages, and display racks and formats that sell, particularly in aisle promotions.
