Paperboard delivers luxurious appeal to Swiss chocolates

A premium, coated-one-side paperboard material is helping Swiss company Chocolat Frey AG achieve the distinctive, prestigious look it sought for its Superior, Swiss Delice Supreme, and Tastefully Yours private-label chocolate bars.

From MeadWestvaco, the Crescendo board was recommended by one of Chocolat Frey’s business partners, Regia HighPack AG. Regia served as a consultant and board converter for the project. Before Chocolat Frey began using the board, it conducted trial marketing with Regia. Successful trial results led to the company’s use of Crescendo. Regia offset-prints the 14-pt board in six to eight colors for the 15 or so different brands, at its Oensingen, Switzerland facility.

According to MeadWestvaco, paperboard packaging conveys a quality image. For Chocolat Frey’s “large-format,” thin bars, the material offers protection as well as shelf appeal.

“Crescendo offered excellent printability and ran through all of our machines with no problems,” comments Regia’s Ueli Bichsel, manager of purchasing, marketing, and development. The converter ships the printed board material to Chocolat Frey for filling in Switzerland. Some adjustments in the filling lines were necessary to accommodate the board, but no new equipment was required.

“As a substrate, Crescendo provides an aesthetically pleasing surface, gloss, and good mechanical stability,” says Beat Luthi, head of packaging development for Chocolat Frey. “We’ve been quite pleased.”
