Produce, pet foods grow flexibles

The value of flexible packaging is expected to grow 3.5% this year to $19.7 billion, according to the State of the Industry Report 2001. Released in June by the Flexible Packaging Assn.

(Linthicum, MD), the report says that fresh produce, pet foods, meat, poultry and seafoods, snacks, and surgical/medical markets will drive the growth.

The report is based on an FPA member survey and other research, including the association’s Outlook Survey of 43 member converters and 56 member suppliers. Looking to the future, respondents expect mergers and acquisitions to result in a polarization of small and large firms. They also predict further consolidation, and continued technological advances such as better quality printing and new substrates. Respondents also “envision greater pressure on margins as a result of higher material costs, mergers and acquisitions, and end users trying to reduce their costs. The report indicates that labor shortages of hourly workers are affecting eight of 10 converters, down from nine of 10 last year.

In its 11th year of publication, the report is available to non-FPA members for $3귔. (JB)
