Decoration techniques unify Dial look

To impart an upscale look to its new Ultra Skin Care soaps, Phoenix-based Dial Corp. relies on printing and decorating technologies ranging from gravure-printed, film-laminated carton stock to hot foil stamping.

Contrary to first glance, the two-count bar soap carton with internal divider is not decorated via foil stamp; rather, the 18-pt recycled paperboard is overlaminated with 48-ga metallized polyester, itself gravure-printed in 5 colors. Two colors are used for the swirled jade background, and a transparent yellow is used to create the reflective gold. Compared to hot stamping, the metallized film allows Dial to use reflective gold more liberally, on every panel, according to Mark Hannen, senior packaging associate. The carton is converted, printed and glued by Waldorf (St. Paul, MN). The carton for the pump bottle of liquid soap is printed via four-color offset and does use hot-foil stamp decoration, though very selectively. Colbert Packaging (Lake Forest, IL) prints and forms the folding carton from 20-pt recycled paperboard. For durability in the shower, Dial chose film rather than paper for the front and back labels of its body wash product. The labels are converted by The Smyth Cos. (St. Paul, MN). The front is polyethylene printed in three colors via rotary letterpress, plus hot foil stamping. For a no-label look on the back, Dial chose a clear coextrusion of polypropylene and PE that Smyth prints via four-color flexo.
