Foodservice product hits club stores

When Buffalo, NY-based food producer Rich Products decided to downsize its cinnamon raisin biscuits from a foodservice to a retail package, it faced two key challenges.

First it had to figure out how to package its icing in a reclosable container that could be used by consumers as needed. Then it had to create a package that stood out in the freezer cases of the nation's warehouse clubs. "For foodservice, our icing came in a big plastic pouch," says Trish Touma, product manager at Rich Products. "We needed to put that item in some sort of consumer packaging." The package also had to be able to withstand freezing and refreezing. Rich Products' solution came in a tube from Victor Tube (Pittsburgh, PA). "The tube is perfect for our needs," says Touma. "It remains pliable even when frozen and it can be refrozen again without fracture." The tube is made of low-density polyethylene with a clear epoxy barrier coat on the outside. Offset printing is done in black. A polypropylene cap is also supplied by Victor Tube. Bright colors played an important role in creating an eye-catching carton for warehouse club displays. With graphics handled by KKB Design (Buffalo, NY), the six-color job is printed offset on a 12-pt SBS liner that was chosen for its durability in freezing conditions. Beneath the liner is E-flute corrugated that helps protect the flaky frozen dough throughout distribution and warehousing. Carton converter is Color Box (Richmond, IN). Rich's cinnamon raisin biscuits are currently in test markets and can be found in some Sam's warehouse club stores. The package, which contains 24 biscuits and a 4-oz tube of icing, retails at around $5.99.
