What does convenience food really mean to the consumer?

Many consumers want convenience food to ASSIST them when preparing a meal, not replace the meal altogether—harkening back 50 years when convenience foods first entered American kitchens.

While some consumers still rely on "complete solutions" when it comes to convenience foods, others seem to be trying to create the "home-cooked" appeal of a meal, a la yesteryear. The study suggests that the early "complete meal" solution evolved from the average person's desire to "eat-out" even if they couldn't afford to eat out in a restaurant. Now, with so many consumers eating out on a regular basis, the idea of a home-cooked meal is regaining its appeal.
