Packets add spice to pork packs

Farmland Foods, Inc., Kansas City, MO, introduced case-ready Extra Tender Fresh Pork in random-weight vacuum packs earlier this year. Each pack contains a ½-oz seasoning packet to promote a custom, do-it-yourself approach to seasoning.

Marketing director Dave Reiter says this dovetails with research indicating that “90 percent of consumers are put off by preseasoned meat. This allows them to season to taste.”

Each of the six flavorings are packed in a clear, nonprinted ½-oz film packet that’s positioned by hand in the bottom of the product pack prior to meat placement so as not to be obscured by a pressure-sensitive label, marketing director Dan Jacobsen points out. Another p-s label is applied on the top, or front, of the package. The packs are formed, filled, and sealed at Farmland’s case-ready facility in Omaha, NE, on equipment from Multivac (Kansas City, MO). The equipment uses two webs of clear multi-layer barrier film from Curwood (Oshkosh, WI). The packs typically weigh about 2 lb, delivering a 40-day shelf life. Depending on the cut, the product is priced between $2.99 and $4.99/lb. (RL)
