Red dye may be labeled

FDA has proposed to require food and cosmetic labels to list the presence of cochineal extract and carmine, two widely used red dyes extracted from insects.

Currently, these dyes can be listed as “color added” or E120 on labels. The proposed rule was prompted by reports of 35 cases of severe allergic reaction to the dyes. CSPI petitioned for such labeling back in 1998. Carmine is used in a wide range of food and cosmetic products including ice cream, strawberry milk, fruit cocktail cherries, liqueurs, lipstick, makeup base, nail polish, and baby products.
